Internal Frame Backpack
70Advantages of Using an Internal Frame Backpack
The internal frame backpack originates from the mountaineering world, where it would be dangerous for an external frame backpack because it can get caught on rock and ice.
Below are the advantages of using an internal frame backpack:
- Because the weight is closer to your back, it gives you more stability when carrying the pack
- It gives you more freedom of movement because it's less bulky and less restrictive than external frame backpacks
- There are a lot more options for internal frame backpacks as new ones are developed
- Suitable for a lot more activities compared to external frame backpacks
Internal frame backpacks are also referred to as I-frames.
Two Top Internal Frame Backpack Brands
Arc’Teryx
Arc’Teryx internal frame backpacks are some of the best looking hiking backpacks I’ve ever seen.
However, Arc’Teryx are not just known their good looking designs. They’re well known for their watertight zippers used in their waterproof jackets and so they also use them in their backpacks. Mind you that zippers are not usually leak-proof.
In their Bora 95 model, which a full sized internal frame backpack, they use Urethane coated fabric together with the watertight zippers that ensure that everything inside it stays dry. Each piece is cleanly cut with scrupulously taped seams with tight and even stitching.
They have a capacity ranging from 86 liters to 110 liters (5250 cubic inches to 6710 cubic inches), which is stated conservatively. This backpack actually holds a little bit more than that and your gear goes in very smoothly.
The design of this internal frame backpack is very thoughtful. They have a profoundly adjustable suspension system, the top pocket pops off in seconds, the cunning buckle/D-ring gives you the option of strapping on extra clothes, two external daisy chains, ice axe holders and water bottle pockets and many other features. You can even melt snow for drinking with this backpack.
This internal frame backpack is probably the best you can find and it’s something that you really need to try to appreciate what it’s all about. Weight ranges from 7 pounds 1 ounce to 7 pounds 11 ounces depending on the capacity and it’s suitable for both men and women with its
Gregory
Gregory’s internal frame backpack, the Baltoro 70 won the 2008 Editor’s choice award from Backpacker magazine.
This internal frame backpack is one piece of high tech kit. They use something that they call the Exclusive Response suspension technology that automatically gives you a custom fit and it really does just that.
The comfort and stability of this internal frame backpack surprised many testers who took it on a hiking trip in the Rockies, Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and skip-touring in Idaho.
The Exclusive Response technology also does a good job in making your load actually feel lighter.
With plenty of pockets, you can keep your backpack highly organized.
It only hold about 4300 cubic inches and weighs about 5 pounds 9 ounces but it’s also a lot cheaper than Bora 95 (almost half the price).

These are two excellent choices for internal frame backpacks.
I think this is a great source for anyone with the devotion to actually want to buy one of these things. They're great for a variety of outdoors activities but let's face it, most of us aren't the outdoorsy type. Thanks for the information, great hub.
i went backpacking last year - one of these would have been nice!
hope to go again in a couple of years so might be forced to make a wee investment...
The difference between a great backpacking expereince and a torturous experience is in the backpack itself.
The wrong backpack will wear you out in a heartbeat! And you will be miserable to boot!
Anyone considering any type of backpacking would be wise to read this hub, beifre investing in a pack.
Good hub!
I definitely need to upgrade my backback. It looks no where as good as these and is probably holding me back on my hikes.
Good Stuff. Nice product. This is best for hikes.
The Art Teryx internal frame backpacks look REALLY cool. They actually look quite upmarket and trendy, if that's possible for a backpack!
The difference between a great week in the woods and a miserable week in the woods could easily come down to your pack. I've used internal and external framed packs and must say that the benefits of the internal frame are well worth the cost. I think internal framed packs give you a better ability to control where the weight of your pack gets distributed, which makes a huge difference in how comfortable the load is to carry. Good advice on the Gregory packs as well, I've had one for about 8 years and love it.
I like the shape of the Gregory's internal frame backpack, but don't like orange. I'm going to check whether it comes in other colors. If it comes in a blue or a green, I'll buy one next time I'm looking for a new internal frame backpack - so much better than the external frames if you ask me.
These are all great looking backpacks...^^ but I agree with solution...the Gregory backpack looks better and more chic.
Good information on backbacks. I plan to do a big hiking trip this spring and this is good information to know when it is time to buy a new backpack.
I recently spent a week out camping. I wish I had read this first. I decided to use an old school pack that was laying around, and it was a bad bad choice. Thanks for this information.
I definitely believe that when going backpacking or camping its definitely worth your time and money to buy a durable backpack that will hold up through time.
This is one thing I should have done before I went camping and hiking with the kids. Checked out a page like yours and got me a decent good quality backpack. Going for lower quality nearly broke my back in half. Oh well win some lose some.
