The rule of thumb about tents is to have one that will accommodate one extra person. But sometimes it may not be necessary especially for soloist who want to travel light. If you’re expecting to sleep in backpackers hostels, shelters or bed and breakfasts, it may be a good idea to carry a light tent just in case.

A standard 2-person tent may be too heavy to be worth it. These shelters are great for this purpose. They’re light and packs small.

Kiva Shelter

The kiva shelter is a simple pyramid shaped tent that is supported by either a single tent pole or by suspending the center from a tree branch.

There are no floors for this tent but the ground can be dug out to provide standing and sleeping space for three or four people. This shelter is suitable for most conditions.

1-Person Tent

A 1-person tent is a bit heavier than tarps but they provide better protection against the weather. There may be a bit of a problem with condensation with this type of tent but the front door can usually be rolled open for ventilation.

Headroom is limited and taking your meal sitting up inside the tent can be difficult.

Bivvy Bag

Also called bivouac bags or bivvy sacks this is the lightest and smallest option. There is no standing room and it’s much like sleeping bag turned into a tent with hoops.

Older versions have a big problem with condensation but with Gore-Tex, newer ones are breathable. There’s even a vestibule with enough space for your gear.

A bivvy bag is useful in the mountains where it’s cool and dry. The weight and size makes it easy to carry. Great for sleeping under the stars without a tent.
