Sling Light Camping Chair

Having something to lean on can be such a blessing especially after a long day of hiking. You use your backpack balanced by a trekking pole to lean on or you can use a camping chair.

A camping chair should be portable and lightweight because you’re going to be carrying it around a lot.

There are two main types of camping chairs. Legged camping chairs and fabric or foam that envelopes the buttocks are suitable for camping on campsites where there is no need to carry them around on your backpack.

They can weigh as much as 8 pounds (usually more) and most hikers don’t find them worth the weight especially when other alternatives are available.

If you still prefer legged camping chairs for hiking, you can opt for the Travel Chair which is a stool like camping chair that weighs about 2 pounds. The version with a backrest only weighs about 3 pounds. I know some scouts who use it regularly for camping.

Another alternative is the Sling Light camping chair. This chair is quite new and it’s super light. It weighs only about 18 oz and very comfortable to use. You carry it by strapping around your backpack. I’ve never used this camping chair before but it looks quite interesting. The downside is the price. A Sling Light camping chair cost about $90.

You can also try the PICO arm chair. It folds down the the size of a laptop and has an arm rest, cup holder and some pockets for magazine, ipods, etc. It weighs a whopping 9 pounds! That’s a lot of weight for backpacking but this chair is great for fishing and camping. At $130 it's not very cheap.

Ultra Light and Ultra Portable Camping Chairs

The camping chair that’s popular with backpackers consist of a fabric shell, with wands or stays, that turn a self-inflating air mattress into a chair-like form. They are very lightweight and ultra portable.

Some can be folded up and fit into a pocket like the Therma-a Rest Lite Seat. This type of camping chair usually weigh around 18 ounces and can double as a mattress which is why it is very popular also besides being ultra portable.

An alternative to this type of camping chair is the Nada Chair. This chair is unique in a sense that you don’t sit on them but instead you wear them. Because of that it’s not really a camping but it function as one. You can use it on the ground on sit on a flat bench. All is gives you is back support.

A Nada Chair is probably the lightest and most portable camping chair you can find. They’re also good for your back by keeping them straight. Also called the slouch buster, I use is a lot even when not camping.
